Unfortunately, it seems that you do need to purchase one copy of the game for each switch device. Sony and Nintendo seem to not allow this. That is why I bought two xboxes instead of Japanese game consoles. Nintendo does not seem to allow sharing a game with a friend locally to play head to head using two switch consoles. So good luck finding 7 other people with nintendo switches and convincing them all to buy the same game so you can all play together with your own consoles in the same room. To do that you need to all play using 8 controllers on ONE switch, which will probably need to be hooked up to a tv so everyone can see the screen. Even the switch lite does not allow one person to use the built in physical controls and one person to use a wireless controller: both must have wireless controllers. Nintendo seems to not understand various (obvious) mobile use case scenarios very well, i.e. head to head or nintendo lite with a friend who has an external controller. Thats why I gave up and just use my phone with the razer junglecat controllers so I can have a portable device that meets all use case scenarios and is way more portable as well. So to be specific in order to play local ON THEIR OWN CONSOLES each then yes you need two games. However as long as the consoles aren't Switch Lites you can simply Dock the one console with the game and play on the TV with the JoyCons. In addition any digitally purchased game can be "shared" to other switches. To do that you must log into the second switch with the same account you used to purchase the game and set it as your new Primary switch in the settings. This allows you to download it. Then back on the original switch you can make it your Primary switch again. Now both switches can play the game BUT NOT AT THE SAME TIME. AND the second non-primary switch must maintain an internet connection to play. For example let's say you bought Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. Both games can be downloaded onto both Switch, but both switches can not play Mario Kart at the same time so the other one must play Animal Crossing. The same way if you bought those two games as cartridges you wouldn't be able to play that one cartridge on both switches. The console marked as primary will have playing priority so can stop the other one from playing. Similar to how a TV streaming service can be logged into multiple TVs but have a restriction so that only one TV may watch. Ver menos

For networked multiplayer the game supports up to 12 players, and as I understand it you can have 4 players on each console. so 12 player local wireless should be possible with 3 systems and copies of the game.

I don't know why everyone is telling you to buy two games. Your question is if you need two games to play together on local and the answer to that is no! Some games only have online multiplayer and for that you do need to buy two consoles and two different games to play together but Mario Kart 8 is different in that you can have one couch buddy to play online matches with or you can have up to four couch buddies in local multiplayer. So no need to buy two copies. I wouldn't trust Amazon answers for this. Next time I would google if a certain game has local multiplayer or not. Hope this helps.

It's one game per account unless they are playing local or side-by-side on the same machine. If each child has a switch and wants to play, they would each need a game. Animal crossings Minecraft, and many other games have to be downloaded to each counsel to be played with each other if they are not on the same machine.

If they are playing on separate consoles, yes. But up to four people can play Mario Kart 8 on the SAME console, and you only need one copy of the game for that.

Although they are playing on their own console they are still be able to play in the same match by joining one another's room as friends even when one kid is away from home. On the other hand, if they decided to play on just one console, you just need to buy one game for them to play together on one TV even playing on line. The one game you bought can be share between two consoles, take turns. My suggestion is, buy one first and buy another if the other kid also asks for one later. Another thing I like to mention is that two player mode on one console is extremely loud because the explosion and yelling of the driver are double. The kids keep turning the volume up try to hear their own sound and then both kids be hollering because of getting upset. This depends how you look at it, it may be the good part of playing together.
